Get Ahead of the Fall Rush: Simplify Your Life
Wellness
The fall rush is real. School and work schedule changes, sports practices, after-school care, appointments, and other commitments can quickly turn a manageable routine into a hectic one. And when schedules get overloaded, the added stress isn’t good for anyone’s mental or physical health.
If your routine isn’t quite running smoothly yet, now is a great time to make a few adjustments. A little organization and planning can help simplify busy days and make the season feel more manageable.
Declutter and organize
You might know where everything is amidst the cluttered drawers, kids’ closets, or your desk, but all that “stuff” can still be negatively impacting your health. Research suggests that clutter can contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety.
Likewise, constantly switching between tasks and managing overly packed schedules can leave us feeling overwhelmed. Take a few easy steps to help keep everyday chaos under control:
- Declutter your space. Spend a few minutes each week clearing countertops, entryways, or workspaces. Research has found that tidy environments can improve focus, making it easier to relax and be productive.
- Organize early. As you’re clearing away the clutter, take an inventory of any usable school, sports, and work supplies you already have. Keeping essentials organized and easy to find can save both time and money throughout the season.
- Check off necessary appointments. Get any necessary sports physicals out of the way. Consider also scheduling other appointments, such as dental or preventive care, before calendars become even more crowded to help minimize missed work and school time.
Set a Fall Routine
As schedules settle into place, a few simple routines can help make busy weekdays run more smoothly:
- Plan meals ahead. Even planning just three or four dinners each week can eliminate the nightly “What’s for dinner?” scramble. Consider preparing ingredients in advance or cooking extra portions for leftovers. If you prepare school lunches, take some time to plan and prep those as well.
- Streamline your calendar. Keep one shared family calendar, whether digital or on paper, to track appointments, practices, deadlines, and activities. Seeing everything in one place can help avoid scheduling conflicts and reduce last-minute surprises. Search for family calendar apps to keep schedules at everyone’s fingertips.
- Create a grab-and-go space. Designate a specific place for backpacks, sports equipment, work bags, and other frequently used items. Taking a few minutes each evening to gather what everyone needs can save valuable time during busy mornings.
Finally...
- Protect your downtime. As activities and commitments fill the calendar, resist the urge to fill every available space. Before committing to another activity, ask whether it aligns with your household’s priorities. Leave room for rest, exercise, hobbies, and simply spending time together. As the saying goes, remember that “No” is a complete sentence.
Simplifying isn’t about lowering your standards; it’s about creating practical systems that make everyday life a little easier. Even if the fall rush is already underway, a few small changes now can help you feel more organized, reduce stress, and leave more room for what really matters: your health, your relationships, and enjoying the season.
